چکیده

Abstract We use Paschen- β (Pa ; 1282 nm) observations from the Hubble Space Telescope G141 grism to study star formation and dust-attenuation properties of a sample 29 low-redshift ( z < 0.287) galaxies in CANDELS Ly α Emission at Reionization survey. first compare nebular attenuation Pa /H with stellar inferred spectral energy distribution, finding that our are consistent an average ratio continuum gas 0.44, but large amount excess scatter beyond observational uncertainties. Much this is linked variation between dust as measured by (space-based) (ground-based) H . This implies there important differences grism-based/wide-aperture fluxes ground-based/slit-measured Balmer decrement. next rates (SFRs) those dust-corrected UV. perform survival analysis infer census emission implied both detections nondetections. find evidence lower mass have more their attenuation-corrected UV SFRs. When considering detection limits, observation supports idea lower-mass experience “burstier” histories. Together, these results show valuable tracer galaxy’s SFR, probing different timescales potentially revealing otherwise missed optical tracers.

Dependence of Dust Obscuration on Star Formation Rates in Galaxies

Many investigations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies have explored details of dust obscuration, with a number of recent analyses suggesting that obscuration appears to increase in systems with high rates of star formation. To date these analyses have been primarily based on nearby (z ≤ 0.03) or UV selected samples. Using 1.4GHz imaging and optical spectroscopic data from the Phoenix D...

The Star Formation History of Low Redshift Spiral Galaxies

Recent results on the star formation histories of nearby spiral galaxies do not conform to the classical view of how such systems evolve. Bulges have a range of light-weighted ages and are probably strongly innuenced by the inner disks. Disks probably do not have a smoothly monotonic, exponential star forming history but do show a remarkable degree of regulation over time scales with a ratio of...

Star Formation in High Redshift Galaxies

Observations of the high redshift Universe, interpreted in the context of a new generation of computer simulated model Universes, are providing new insights into the processes by which galaxies and quasars form and evolve, as well as the relationship between the formation of virialized, star-forming systems and the evolution of the intergalactic medium. We describe our recent measurements of th...

Star formation history and dust attenuation in galaxies drawn from ultraviolet surveys

We compile a new sample of 115 nearby, non-Seyfert galaxies spanning a wide range of star formation activities, from starburst to nearly dormant, based on ultraviolet observations with various satellites. We combine these observations with infrared observations to study the relation between ratio of total far-infrared to ultraviolet luminosities and ultraviolet spectral slope (the ‘IRX-UV’ rela...

Are star formation rates of galaxies bimodal?

Star formation rate (SFR) distributions of galaxies are often assumed to be bimodal with modes corresponding to star-forming and quiescent galaxies, respectively. Both classes of galaxies are typically studied separately, and SFR distributions of star-forming galaxies are commonly modelled as lognormals. Using both observational data and results from numerical simulations, I argue that this div...
